Searching for Leyland cypress trees for sale? Leyland Cypress trees are often used at Christmastime during the holidays for decorations and fresh Christmas greenery.  The Leyland cypress (leylandii) is a species of evergreen conifer known for it’s rapid growth rate. These hardy evergreens are a favorite in backyards, parks and other landscaped areas for a few reasons. It grows quickly and well in most, even inhospitable, environments. It isn’t harmed easily even with heavy pruning so these trees can be shaped to the owner’s desire. They are also often planted side-by-side so that, when they are mature, the thick foliage forms a living wall and screen from the elements. This convenient evergreen along with a wide selection of other landscape trees and shrubs are available for sale at Appalachian Farms!

Leyland cypresses can grow 50ft in 16 years which makes them ideal for people who are fans of their privacy. The tree grows into a tall, slender, oval shape if not pruned; and it is recommended that Leyland cypresses be pruned yearly. The needles are fused into a spray-like pattern, dark blueish-green, soft and appear almost scaly. Leyland’s produce small, round cones that are about a ½ inch in diameter and typically have 8 scales. Interestingly, this species is completely sterile and can only propagate through cuttings. This is due to the fact that Leyland cypresses are hybrids. In the late 1800’s, C.J. Leyland planted seeds from an Alaska cedar cone that had been accidentally fertilized by a Monterey Cypress. The result was a shockingly fast-growing, and impressive-looking evergreen. It’s sterile because it’s originating “parent” trees, while both native to America, are from quite different parts of the country and would never naturally cross pollinate.

Whether you want privacy, decoration, or both, Leyland cypresses make a useful and visually appealing addition to any landscape. These unique and sturdy hybrids along with a great many more interesting and beautiful landscaping trees are for sale at G&S Trees.
