Searching for Princeton elm trees? Ulmus Americana, commonly called the Princeton elm tree and, alternatively, the American elm, is an unassuming species of elm abundant throughout the United States. It’s popular for it’s towering height, slender form and shady coverage. This elm is a favorite to line and distinguish important roads and paths but also makes an elegant, regal addition to any park, landscape or backyard. The Princeton elm tree can reach heights of anywhere from 60 to 130 feet and is most used as a street tree and shade tree. This is due to the upright and symmetrical trunk, thick darkly-colored foliage and umbrella-like crown. It’s also highly adaptable to wet or dry conditions and has proven robust in urban settings. It’s ability to withstand air pollution makes it the ideal tree to decorate the sidewalks of busy city streets. The individual leaves are a dark green, ovular with tapered ends, and grow to about 6 inches in length. The tree does-almost imperceptibly-flower. Tiny green buds the exact shade of the leaves begin to grow at the base of leaves when the tree reaches maturity around 9 years of age. In the Fall, the leaves of this elm turn a stunning golden yellow.

This tree was initially chosen to artfully flank Washington Road in Princeton, New Jersey by a local nursery owner in 1922 because of its pleasing appearance. A few years later in 1928, Dutch elm disease swept North America after the beetles that cause it came to the country on logs shipped from the Netherlands. Many other popular types of elm began to show signs of infection but the Princeton elm shocked many with its resistance to the disease.
